How To Keep Track Of FCPX Libraries

Need to find older Libraries, or those not often used? Well you can have all Libraries, on all connected hard drives, all show up in one place, no matter how much you connect or disconnect external drives. Note, this is NOT copying anything. It is a "Smart Folder" in the Finder. Similar to a Smart Collection inside FCPX itself. 10 easy steps is all it takes!

  1. In the Finder, in the File menu, select New Smart Folder.
  2. Top right, click the plus sign.
  3. Change the "Name" selection to "Kind".
  4. Change the "Any" selection to "Other".
  5. In the blank field to the right of that, type in "final cut pro library".
  6. At the top right, click "Save".
  7. Title it "FCPX Libraries".
  8. Keep both "Add To Sidebar" and "Hide Extension" checked.
  9. Save it to your Desktop or somewhere handy.
  10. Pour a drink and enjoy.

What About All Those Backup Files?

One drawback is that this will include all of the automatic database backups FCPX does. Which could end up being a royal PITA. But fear not! Three more steps and those are filtered out!

11 Click the plus sign at top right, while holding down the Option key.
12  Set the new field from "Any" to "None".

Now here is where you have to figure out what time zone your auto-backups are being assigned. Look in your Final Cut Backups folder, and see. I'm in Central Time, so the two time zone designations my backups get appended with are CDT and CST (Central Daylight Savings/Standard Time).

13 For the "Name" and "contained" line, type in the three digit time zone. This will filter them out of the Smart Folder.

What About Other App Projects?

Yes, you can use this same technique to make Smart Folders in your Finder sidebar for any app that has its own file type. I use it for Logic Pro X, Motion and Pixelmator projects, also. As well as to track my Camera Archives.

With some file types, you may need to set the search criteria to "File Extension" and then to the extension such as ".logicx" or whatever is necessary.

Legacy Project/Event Folders

If you have Event and Project folders from older FCPX versions, before it used Libraries, then..
  1. Launch FCPX
  2. In the File menu select "Update Projects And Events".
  3. This will update older projects and such to Libraries.
  4. Create a Smart Folder as outlined above.
