Nov 2018 Upgrade Highlights

Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 all got nice upgrades on November 15, 2018. Although this was a minor update according to the version numbers (a second decimal increment only), the few additional features are very nice. I’ll cover the highlights here of what I will use the most, with links to full release notes and user manual pages.

Final Cut Pro X 10.4.4

Compare Viewer
Most important to me is the Compare Viewer (Cntrl-Cmd-6). You can now compare clips for color grading, each with (or without) its own set of scopes. You can compare the clip before or after the one you’re working on at the moment. You can also save frames for later comparison. It’s very simple, very quick, and no one has done it as well as FCPX, once again.

Workflow Extensions
These will open up amazing things for FCPX. Adobe has all their services linked to the inside of PPro, but FCPX allows third parties to go one better. For example, I use Frame.IO daily, and it is very important for me to access it several times a day, for both client review/approval, or file exchanges between remote locations. The implementation Frame.IO had before was nice in the OSX menu bar, but not it is 100% inside of FCPX. The only exception is if you need to upload a Timeline as a video, you still use the traditional export preset (you’re still not leaving FCPX). But now you open your Frame.IO window inside FCPX, upload, download, it’s a breeze! The three currently installing with 10.4.4 are Frame.IO, Shutterstock and CatDV. But look for more to develop soon! Request this from your favorite FCPX extended service vendor! Personally, we use Upsplash and Pexels at my TV station, so we’re hoping for that eventually.

New Marque Tool Behavior
The marque tool is also known as lassoing or click-and-drag-selection. You click in an empty space in a Timeline, drag, and draw a section rectangle around the multiple assets you want to select. Problem is, if you did this to include a Connected Storyline, it only selected the clips inside. NOW if you start the lasso above the level of a Storyline Bar, that Storyline and all other Storylines included in the selection, will highlight Storylines as wholes. If you start the lasso below the Storyline Bar, only the individual clips get selected.

Video Noise Reduction
I really could use this on occasion, but haven’t had much time to test it, beyond the point of learning it is a system hog, and you won’t get much real-time playback out of it. My late 2013, 15” rMBP maxed out won’t give me any playback at all if I put this on a 1080 HD clip. But hoping to get more time review it soon.

Core Text Engine
Core Text engine ensures accurate display of Arabic letters, Indic vowel signs in Devanagari, and Thai diacritics.

Other New Features And Fixes
Batch Export, new timecode display (source and/or clip), and others, plus lots of fixes. Check out the release notes for a full list.

Motion 5.4.2
Full upgrade release notes available here.

Color Grading Tools
We now have the same color grading tools in Motion that we do in FCPX. Which is really great! Color wheels, curves, balance effect, it’s all there in Motion now.

Comic Filter
Not something that is ground breaking, but fun, and is in FCPX, also.

Compressor 4.4.2
Full upgrade release notes available here.

64-Bit Application AT LAST!
Which means it can now take advantage of all your RAM and all cores of your CPU more efficiently and fully. I have actually found that my MPEG-2 transport stream transcodes for broadcast take HALF the time they used to take. PLUS it is backwards compatible with 32-bit codecs.

SRT Support
Same SRT support as FCPX.

Automatic MXF & QT Settings
Compressor can now automatically configure settings such as frame rate/size and others based on MXF or QT source files. I’ve yet to figure out what this means, as when I apply an MXF or QT setting preset, they don’t automatically make those settings correctly. Can’t find anything about this in the user manual.

User Interface
“Improves layout and readability of Inspector pane.” OK, again, not seeing any changes. What am I missing? Still trying to research this. Looks the same a before to me…
